Every four years, billions of people around the world pick a team and convince themselves it might actually happen this time.

Most of them are wrong. Let's be honest about who can actually win the 2026 FIFA World Cup — and who is just hoping.

Argentina — Defending champions The team no one wants to draw. Lionel Messi is back and Argentina can truly chase destiny at the World Cup. They have the squad depth, the experience and the hunger of a team that knows exactly what winning feels like. The danger is complacency and the weight of expectation that comes with defending a title.

France — The scariest squad on paper France are in Group I with Senegal, Iraq and Norway. They should walk out of that group without breaking a sweat. Mbappé, Griezmann, Camavinga — the depth of French football right now is genuinely frightening. They were runners-up in 2022. They want what Argentina have.

England — "It's Coming Home" (Again) England are in Group L with Croatia, Ghana and Panama. England fans have been saying "this is our year" since 1966. But the squad under their current setup is genuinely talented — and sometimes, the year actually does come. Could 2026 be it? Maybe. Probably not. But maybe.

Brazil — Hungry and hurt Brazil are in Group C with Morocco, Haiti and Scotland. Brazil went out in the quarterfinals in Qatar after a penalty shootout that left the entire country devastated. They come to 2026 with something to prove. Whether they prove it is another question.

Spain — The dark horse Spain are in Group H with Cape Verde, Saudi Arabia and Uruguay. Young, fast, technically brilliant. Spain's current generation plays football that is genuinely beautiful to watch. Do not sleep on them.

The honest prediction: France or Argentina lift the trophy on July 19 in New Jersey. Brazil make the semifinals. England lose on penalties. Again.

But that is why we watch. Because none of this is certain until the final whistle.
