Virat Kohli walked to the crease on Sunday night at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad and did what he always does. He scored an unbeaten 75 off just 42 balls, hit the winning six off Rashid Khan in the 18th over, and handed RCB their second consecutive IPL title.
Chasing 156, RCB reached 161 for 5 with 12 balls to spare. Only Chennai Super Kings and Mumbai Indians have ever done this before. RCB are now the third.
Think about that for a second. In 19 years of IPL cricket, only three teams have successfully defended their title. RCB are one of them.
After collecting the Player of the Match award, Kohli said: "I said to a few other boys that it doesn't feel like the same pressure as last year. We knew what kind of ability we have in this group. We topped the table. There's a reason we got here first."
He wasn't wrong.
RCB's bowlers were brilliant first up. Rasikh Salam picked up 3 for 27 while Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Josh Hazlewood finished with two wickets each to restrict Gujarat Titans to just 155 for 8. GT never really threatened after that.
Former RCB owner Vijay Mallya, watching from wherever he watches these days, took to social media and wrote: "RCB RCB... Congratulations Double back-to-back IPL Champions. Namma dodda Simhagulu roared loud and made us all very proud."
For RCB fans who waited 18 long years for their first title — and then got another one 12 months later — Sunday night in Ahmedabad was something they'll never forget.
