Five years. That is how long Dorohedoro fans have been waiting for Season 2.
If you have not seen Season 1 — the premise is one of the most unusual in anime. A man named Caiman wakes up with his head replaced by that of a lizard. Inside his mouth lives another face that speaks to the people Caiman bites. He cannot remember who he was before this happened. He wants answers. He and his friend Nikaido live in the Hole — a polluted, chaotic city at the bottom of a world stratified between powerless humans and sorcerers who use magic and live in a separate dimension above.
Dorohedoro is dark, violent, strange, genuinely funny and impossible to categorise cleanly. The world it builds feels completely unlike anything else in anime. The characters — including the sorcerer villain Shin, his partner Noi, and their boss Nikaido — develop in ways that blur the line between hero and antagonist until you stop trying to work out which side you are supposed to be on.
Season 2 picks up directly from the end of Season 1 and wastes no time getting into the story. Early reactions from fans who watched with fansubs before the official release praised the animation quality and confirmed the story goes to places even people who read the manga did not fully expect.
Dorohedoro is not for everyone. It is graphic and weird and asks you to keep up with a dense world from the first episode. But for the people it is for — and they are very dedicated and very vocal — it is one of the best things in anime. Season 2 is now streaming on Crunchyroll. Five years was worth the wait.
